As an Army helicopter pilot prepares for takeoff, he will at times give the ground crew a "thumbs up" before he is given hover and takeoff signals. There are two theories about the origin of this gesture. One theory says the pilot has identified which of his digits is his thumb so he will be able to properly operate his controls. The most compelling theory says this is to show the ground crew the pilot indeed knows which direction is up.
