The daughter of Fred Charles Zimpfer has ask me to help in her search for
anyone who knew him or served with him in country.

He was KIA on Feb. 15,1970, in Quang Tin.He was with the 8TH Cav. F Troop.

The daughter never knew her father but wants greatly to fill the void in her heart. Anyone with pictures or who just had contact with him, all help would be greatly appreciated.

Although I didn't know him, Fred was with the Blues. His Tour of Duty began on Dec 05, 1969 and he was from Buffalo NY.

I was a squad leader in the Blues. Fred was my gunner (carried the M-60 machine gun). A fantastic and big hearted guy known as "Snake". Please have his daughter contact me at cyberbippy@aol.com.

Searching for Fred, cont'd

I thought I would add a little. Others (other than Fred's daughter) should hear something about Fred or as he liked to be called, "Snake". Snake was a consumate "bullshitter", he loved telling stories so it was difficult to tell when he was pulling your leg or being frank. He also hated arbitrary authority (must have made life in the military very difficult for him).

One short story about Snake (if you don't mind). We were operating up in Que Son valley once and the operation was interrupted by headquarters and we were redirected to join an operation south of Chu Lai down near the "horse shoe". The flight stopped in Chu Lai to refuel before continuing on and our slick stopped to refuel across from the PX. Snake decided to run into the PX for some cigarettes while the slick was refueling and I tagged along to get something to snack on.

New regulations at Chu Lai required everyone to have clean uniforms, no bush hats, etc. However, we were covered in paddy mud, having been put on the ground a couple times to check out areas the scout thought deserved a closer look.

An MP had been posted at the door of the PX to insure that no one entered that did not meet the new regulations. We were, of course, refused admittance until we put on clean uniforms and shined our boots. Snake said nothing but turned and started walking back to the slick. My heart sank... I knew Snake was more than furious since he didn't argue. I quickly explained the situation to the MP then noticed his face went white. I looked back and saw Snake stepping out of the slick with his M-60. The MP dissappeared.

A big smile spread across Snake's face as he hefted the gun across his sholders then continued on into the PX to buy his cigarettes. When I asked him what the f*** he was doing, he just slapped me on the back and laughed. He explained that he had no intention of doing anything... He just wanted to see how serious that MP was about keeping working grunts out of the PX.

Guys, thank you so much for your help. I spoke with Freds daughter today and told her what i have found. She cried for a few moments before telling me to thank you all. She will be contacting those that left there e-mail addys. Again, thank you all so much.

You can find a picture of Fred (Snake) in the Vietnam Photos gallery in the Blues Platoon album. His photo is on page one of this album, on the left of the bottom row.

The person in the foreground is John Harris. From left to right in the background is the Blue’s Chieu Hoi scout (I think his name was Quan or Quang, I called him Chuck). Fred Zimpfer is in the center (without a helmet or bush hat). I am embarrassed that I don’t remember the name of the Blue on the right although the face is very familiar.
